10-pounder Read Side-Loader Shell

Note the chipping around the projectile base, which was due to the poor iron and sabot design used by the Confederates. Located near the base is a rebated section developed by the Confederates in an attempt to decrease the extent of chipping which was often severe in projectiles of this style. This projectile contains iron case-shot balls that were inserted through the side-loading hole which is now closed with a lead plug. This Confederate pattern Read-Parrott projectile is scarce. The pictured specimen was recovered from the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
