Confederate
(copy) Whitworth Pattern I, Sub-pattern II
The Federal Naval Blockade hindered the supply of Whitworth projectiles from
Great Britain. This example was an attempt by the Confederates to copy the
British-imported Whitworth Pattern I, Sub-pattern II ammunition which was often in limited
supply. Note the Confederate copper fuze plug and the crude machine marks around the nose
