Charles T. James patented this Pattern II projectile on June 10, 1862, patent
#35,521. The projectile's body has eight vertical flanges and is tapered in a manner
similar to that of a Schenkl. The flanges are wide on the circumference but narrow as they
join the shell. The shell version of this pattern is more common than the solid shot. A
number of examples have been recovered from the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The
last ordnance contract for the manufacture of James projectiles was on July 28, 1864.
