This specimen is
non-excavated and rests on its original wooden sabot. The ball is fixed to the sabot by a
ring or collar around the fuze opening and secured to the sabot with four tin straps
nailed to the wooden cup. Note the crude mold seam around the ball, typical of
Confederate-manufactured projectiles. Note also the deep groove at the base of the wooden
sabot, where the cartridge bag was tied in place.
