This projectile is similar to the specimen pictured here. The lead sabot is missing on this example which is typical of recovered fired Archer projectiles. Note that the well preserved wooden fuze plug is still intact. There are two vertical flame grooves on the projectile body, that were designed to help the propellant flame reach the paper time fuze. In the book The Long Arm of Lee by Jennings Wise mentions on page 128 that Archer projectiles when fired would not fly point foremost, but tumbled and had no effective range. |
