Inventor and armorer
Benjamin B. Hotchkiss was an American inventor closely associated with the Hotchkiss projectile, the banded, three-part rifled projectile widely used in the Civil War. With his brother Andrew he developed and improved the system and secured its patents.
After the war he pursued arms and ordnance manufacture, founding a firm whose name became well known in later rapid-fire guns and ammunition.
